Yanchep Rail Extension officially open

The Yanchep Rail Extension officially opened today (July 14), connecting tens of thousands of people in Perth's northern suburbs to the rail network for the first time.

The YRE extends the Joondalup Line 14.5 km north from Butler, and includes new stations in Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep.

Each station has modern facilities and ample parking, with more than 900 parking bays at Yanchep, 700 at Alkimos Station and 400 at Eglinton.

The state-of-the-art stations unlock residential and commercial land in surrounding areas, opening up new housing opportunities linked to major infrastructure and services.

The extension includes three green fauna bridges – the first of their kind over rail in WA – providing native wildlife a safe crossing over the rail corridor and maintaining habitat connectivity in the Ningana Bushland.

It also included nine public art pieces across the stations, celebrating the unique cultural, historical and environmental aspects of each station and the surrounding areas.

Construction began in late 2019, supporting around 1370 local jobs.

Perth's northern coastal corridor is among Australia's fastest growing areas, and the new train line will connect rapidly developing suburbs to the Perth CBD and airport.

Travel to the city from Yanchep is only a 49-minute journey, and through the two-zone fare cap, costs $4.68– with free travel every Sunday and school students travelling free during the week.

Free community events were held at the new stations to mark the milestone, giving community members the opportunity to ride the new lines. Regular passenger services to start tomorrow, Monday July 15.

The Project was funded jointly by the Australian and WA governments.
