Commuters urged to plan for station shutdown
Transport Minister Troy Buswell today urged public transport users to plan ahead when Perth Station closes for three days from this Friday morning, to enable critical works to progress on the Perth City Link.
Perth Station will be closed from 10.30am on Friday, August 17 to last services on Sunday, August 19, which will affect the Midland, Fremantle and Armadale-Thornlie lines. All trains will stop for a brief time on Sunday night.
During an inspection of the Perth City Link rail site and Perth Station, Mr Buswell said the project was progressing on schedule and the weekend disruption was critical in meeting the mid-2014 completion date.
“We’re on track to realise a 100-year dream to reconnect the CBD and Northbridge and redevelop the heart of Perth,” he said.
“The Perth City Link project to sink the Fremantle line has already brought about some major changes to the precinct and the work to be done this weekend is the next major step towards completion of this transformational project.
“The closure will allow the Fremantle line tracks to be moved - from the Roe Street side of the rail yard to the Wellington Street side - so that work can continue on building the new tunnel; the demolition and rebuild of Platform 9; and construction of a pedestrian underpass to link all Perth Station platforms with Perth Underground.”
The Minister said replacement buses were organised, and there would be a continuous CAT-style shuttle linking Claisebrook, West Leederville and Perth Station.
“Transperth is putting on additional buses to keep passengers moving over the weekend but we encourage commuters to plan ahead and think about alternatives, especially for Friday afternoon peak, which is when the disruption will have the greatest impact,” he said.
The Mandurah and Joondalup lines will not be affected by the station closure until 8pm on Sunday, August 19 when all services close. From 8pm, all trains on all lines will be replaced with bus services.
When passengers return to Perth Station on Monday August 20, a number of platform changes will be in place. The new layout will be in place for about 12 months.

- Mandurah-Joondalup Line passengers can either walk across to Leederville Station (where there will be extra capacity heading north to Clarkson and south - through Perth to the southern suburbs), or catch a bus to the Wellington Street Bus Station, from where it is a quick and easy connection to Perth Underground
