$6.5m upgrade for Kenwick train station

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said today that Kenwick train station would be the latest Transperth stop to be upgraded to bring it into line with current accessibility requirements.

“Though the majority of the Public Transport Authority infrastructure and rolling stock is well ahead of official disability standards, some of the older stations still require some work to make them fully compliant,” Mr Buswell said.

“Kenwick is the sixth station to be upgraded in this continuing program and fourth on the Armadale Line with works well under way at Queens Park, Beckenham and Maddington stations.

“The State Government estimates a $6.5million upgrade at Kenwick would significantly improve disability compliance and better security, such as improved lighting and CCTV. This is the primary focus of East Metropolitan Region MLC Alyssa Hayden who brought to my attention the safety of the local community who use this station.”

The upgrade, subject to detailed design and related costings, is due to start in mid-2013 and be completed in 2014.

Works will involve new platform paving and improved drainage; tactile markers to define key areas for people with vision impairments; and new access ramps.

In addition to improving the station’s accessibility, the upgrade will improve security sightlines and lighting to increase visibility and minimise vandalism and graffiti.

The Public Transport Authority aims to provide passenger transport services accessible to everyone.
