Signal Grove

Tony Jones

Title: Signal Grove

Artist/s: Tony Jones

Year: 2004/2025

Category: Sculpture

Site: Armadale Station

Location Details: Western promenade

Medium: Painted steel

Artist/s Statement:

Signal Grove is inspired by historic railway signals that are no longer in use. While the forms and colours do not replicate any specific signal, they suggest a sense of possible function, as if they might operate.

The composition and scale evoke a grove of tree-like forms, blending industrial heritage with a natural, sculptural rhythm. The sculptures were constructed primarily from recycled steel and repurposed components. Bright, playful colours were chosen to be visually inviting, especially for children, who may also engage with the kinetic elements in some of the pieces.

Previously located on the East side of the old Armadale Station, the works were temporarily removed as part of the METRONET Byford Rail Extension Project. They now take pride of place on the West side of the station, continuing their legacy as a vibrant and meaningful landmark that holds a special place in the hearts of the Armadale community.
