The Unity of Life: Ellenbrook

Marcia McGuire

Title: The Unity of Life: Ellenbrook

Artist/s: Marcia McGuire

Year: 2024

Site: Ellenbrook Station

Location Detail: Artwork is integrated into sections of glazed skylights, centrally positioned in the main station roof/ceiling.

Medium: Ceramic print on glass

Description:

The skylights across the Ellenbrook Line form a suite of artworks dedicated to revealing the interrelationships of all living things across these areas. Marcia McGuire explored the Noongar social and ecological interdependence for Ellenbrook and Ballajura, while Penelope Forlano focused on the ecological interdependence of the flora and fauna for Whiteman Park, Morley and Noranda.

The skylights at Ellenbrook represent Gynning (place of looking). When travellers wanted to enter Whadjuk country, they would seek permission, and those on watch would be looking from this place. They would come down to meet with the travellers and if welcomed, a ceremonial chant and dance would take place, ensuring their safe travels through their country. This ceremony included natural elements such as the Balga (grass tree) stump, WA native Peppermint leaves, and Gum Tree leaves.

The PTA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises  the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this site may contain images or names of people who are deceased.
