Artist/s Statement:

Held in Place is a community-driven mural created in collaboration with students from Marri Grove Primary School. Developed through creative workshops, the mural layers expressive student artworks with native flora and fauna, local elements and abstracted forms to reflect Byford’s identity.

A flowing white line connects the composition, symbolising pathways of connection and growth. Inspired by Colleen Rankin’s reflections in ‘Byford – A Pictorial History (1903-2002)’, community emerged as the defining theme. The mural celebrates local belonging, diversity and shared place. Through paint and sandblasting, the students’ voices are made visible and permanent, illustrating the ways we are all held in place.
