Work to start on Greenwood Station

12/2/04

Construction of the new Park 'n' Ride train station at Greenwood, on the Northern Suburbs Railway, is expected to begin at the end of this month, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today.

Ms MacTiernan said the $6.8million contract to build the station, on the median of the Mitchell Freeway just south of Hepburn Avenue, had been awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd.

Ms MacTiernan said Greenwood station would reduce the passenger and parking congestion at both Whitfords and Warwick stations and stimulate demand from new passengers.

"Greenwood station will be serviced by the new 130km per hour trains, the first of which will arrive in Perth in May this year," she said.

"The station is expected to serve 3,500 passengers on weekdays and is long overdue after being promised by the previous Government since 1996 but never delivered."

The station will have 600 Park 'n' Ride bays, located on the eastern side of the freeway, with passenger access via a footbridge over the south-bound traffic lanes.

In addition, there will be convenient set-down and pick-up facilities for vehicles, and excellent access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Ms MacTiernan said construction was due for completion in early November and the new station would now be integrated with an innovative Transperth beach-bus service to Hillary's Boat Harbour.

"Some design changes to accommodate bus access for new services, in addition to the planned upgrading of traffic lights on Hepburn Avenue for safer disabled access, caused a short delay in finalising the contract," the Minister said.

"Station construction will have minimal impact on current Northern Suburbs Railway services, while freeway disruption is likely to be minimal."
