Lighting upgrades mark Rail Safety Week

Lighting upgrades at 34 pedestrian rail crossings on the Armadale, Midland and Fremantle lines will begin this month as part of a $2.4million State Government investment in the Transperth network.

Marking the start of Rail Safety Week (August 11-17), Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the lighting upgrades would be completed under the Public Transport Authority’s (PTA’s) Crossing Improvement Program.

Mr Nalder said the new lights could be controlled remotely by the PTA and technicians alerted if there were any faults.

The Minister used the start of Rail Safety Week to remind all West Australians to be careful around railway tracks.

“The rate of near misses on our system is lower than in any other State,” he said.

“That’s partially because there are no level crossings on the Joondalup or Mandurah lines, but also because the PTA has been working hard over many years to make the crossings as safe as possible.”

Mr Nalder said the PTA had been running the Right Track rail safety education program since 2006. In that time more than 100,000 students across Western Australia had participated in presentations and activities aimed at reducing unsafe and antisocial behaviour on and around trains and rail infrastructure.

Pedestrian crossings to be provided upgraded lighting on the Armadale Line include those at Albany Highway, Armadale Road, Austin Avenue, Beckenham Street, Dalziell Street, Crawford Street, Deerness Way, Denny Avenue, Dorothy Street, Forrest Road, Fremantle Road, Mint Street, Oats Street, Ottaway Street, Solent Road, Verna Street, Westfield Road, Wharf Street and Welshpool Road.

On the Midland Line, lighting upgrades will take place at crossings on Harper Street, Waylen Street, East Street, Great Eastern Highway, Collier Road and Caledonian Avenue.

Fremantle Line crossing upgrades include Phillimore Street, Ocean Road, Rose Street, Grey Street, Arundel Street, Victoria Street, Napier Street, Marine Access Road and Marine Terrace.
