Becoming a Train Driver

Connect and grow with our team of experienced urban Train Drivers who are committed to delivering services for our customers and contributing to a safe, reliable and efficient transport network.

What do you need?

To be successful in a Train Driver position, you will need basic mechanical or technical ability with literacy and numeracy skills. You must be a good communicator, with proven customer service skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.

How can you join the Transperth team?

We typically open Train Driver recruitment every two years, in response to the changing needs and growth across our network. We will post updates here when recruitment dates are confirmed.

Training requirements

Successful applicants are required to successfully complete a 27- week paid training period, as well as on-the-job training as a trainee Train Driver. You will attain a Certificate IV in Train Driving (Urban Electric) at the end of your training.

Assessment Process

 Information sessions

There are a no planned session at this time.

 Your application

All Train Driver intakes and job vacancies are advertised on our current opportunities page so please check back regularly.

You may be required to address selection criteria and provide a comprehensive resume including two work related referees.

Applications are submitted online via the current opportunities page, and will not be accepted after the closing time specified in the advertisement.

 Shortlisting

The Selection Panel will review all applications and then invite competitive applicants to the next stage of the recruitment process.

The panel will look at not only your resume but also your written responses and online application information to determine if you are shortlisted. They will also be looking to see if your application meets the Special Appointment Requirements (as per the Role Statement) for this position.

 Aptitude tests

At the PTA, we use aptitude tests to see if you are suitable for the role of Train Driver. These tests are designed to specifically measure skills relevant to the duties of a Train Driver. 

 Integrity checks

This may include investigations into suspensions from employment, past employment records and performance, workers compensation and pending criminal charges.

These screenings may be undertaken at any time throughout the recruitment process.

 Interviews

If you are invited to attend an interview, you will be asked a series of questions that relate directly to the role of a Train Driver. This is your opportunity to demonstrate to the panel in person why you are suitable for the role.

 

 Online psychometric assessment
This is a series of psychometric assessments that provide information about a person’s mental agility and personality characteristics. Links to the online assessments will be sent to you via email.
 Medical clearance (psychological and medical)

All applicants are required to undergo medical assessments prior to being invited to the training course.

A one-on-one interview with a psychologist will be conducted to further assess suitability.

A physical medical assessment will also be completed, this includes a medical history questionnaire.

 Notification

Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email at the conclusion of each stage of the process.

Those successful at the end of the process will be placed into a pool, which will remain open for a period of 24 months.

 Induction and training

Successful applicants will commence a 27-week training course which includes both coursework and practical training, as well as on-the-job experience.

The training must be successfully completed before becoming a fully operational Train Driver.
