Seen/Unseen

Haylee Fieldes and Rohin Kickett

Title: Seen/Unseen

Artist/s: Haylee Fieldes and Rohin Kickett

Year: 2024

Site: Whiteman Park Station

Location Detail: Artwork is applied to the northern and southern abutments of the pedestrian linkway passing under Drumpellier Drive, to the south-east of the station.

Medium: Acrylic paint

Description:

Seen/Unseen explores the connection between water and people in the landscape of the Bennett Brook catchment. The north wall depicts the underground Gnangara Water Mound (the unseen), showing it as a subtle side-profile of rock layers and major aquifers. This is juxtaposed alongside an aerial view of an undrained Bennett Brook stream (the seen), showing how it may have looked in the past, when water was plentiful and local Noongar groups camped and lived off the land. Yellow lines represent the traditional Biddi (pathways) that connect the land, water and animals. On the south wall, the same view of the Gnangara Water Mound has become a hidden void and is overlaid with a present-day map displaying the local roads as modern pathways of connection.

The PTA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises  the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this site may contain images or names of people who are deceased.
