Anne Neil and John Walley

Title: Journeys

Artist/s: Anne Neil and John Walley

Year: 2022

Category: Airport Line

Site: Airport Central Station

Location Details: Concourse wall escalators

Description:

Giving tourists and locals alike a sight to see on arrival to Perth, Airport Central Station brings the wow factor on entry with a two-part public art piece along the station’s atrium walls. Passengers travelling down from the elevated entry are greeted by 139 multicoloured sculptural elements along the station’s northern wall depicting birds and flight. Grounding this arrangement is a large-scale glass panel installation on the southern wall, which describes the Noongar connection to the river and estuary waters, and the journeys traditionally taken by Aboriginal people as part of their spiritual obligations.

Artist/S Statement:

The artwork acknowledges that the station is on Noongar land and references Noongar heritage and culture, with emphasis on Noongar journeys and their connection to the river and estuary waters, and birds and flight. The artwork respectfully weaves these layered thoughts together, creating abstract integrated compositions that compliment the architecture and internal colour palette.

The PTA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises  the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this site may contain images or names of people who are deceased.
