Contract awarded for three more New MetroRail stations

24/03/05

A $32million contract to build three train stations for the Southern Suburbs Railway has been awarded to the Western Australian consortium of DORIC Constructions and Brierty Contractors.

The "Package B" contract is for construction of the Cockburn Central (Thomsons Lake), Kwinana (Thomas Road) and Wellard (Leda) train stations.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the new stations would be transit interchanges, with car drop-off/pick-up facilities, feeder bus services, pedestrian and bicycle access and parking for 1,300 cars.

The three stations will cater for more than 8,000 passenger boardings a day with peak period services running every five minutes from Cockburn Central and every ten minutes from the Kwinana and Wellard Stations.

Travel time to Perth will be a little over 15 minutes from Cockburn Central and just under half-an-hour from Wellard.

"The New MetroRail Project continues to gather momentum," Ms MacTiernan said.

"The signing of this contract shows that the new Southern Suburbs Railway is more than just a railway that starts in Perth and ends in Mandurah.

"When completed, nine stations south of the Narrows Bridge will service more than 400,000 people along the Southern corridor - one of the fastest-growing areas in Australia," Ms MacTiernan said.

The DORIC Brierty Joint Venture brings a new consortium to the New MetroRail Project, although both companies are already well-known in the WA construction industry.

Work on the new stations will start from early June when the DORIC Brierty Joint Venture takes possession of the sites.

The stations will be built concurrently with construction staged to most efficiently meet the connecting works with "Package A", the major contract for the construction of the actual railway between Perth and Mandurah.

The award of contract/s to build the remaining three stations for the Southern Suburbs Railway - at Rockingham, Warnbro and Mandurah - will be awarded later this year, completing the construction tendering process for the project.
