Light, space and place

Anne Neil

Title: Light, space and place

Artist/s: Anne Neil

Year: 2007

Category: Integrated

Site: Perth Underground

Location Details: Perth Underground linkway

Description:

The work is a linear composition of 21 lighting units incorporated into the wall cladding of the linkway between Perth Underground and Perth Station. The units contain coloured LED lights which are programmed to create changing light conditions by intermittently varying in colour and intensity. The changes are synchronised to create a pulse or heart beat. The units are controlled by digital lighting technology and therefore have no moving parts and produce no heat. The light source is angled to face into a curved aluminium sleeve structure which reflects and bounces the light off the surface.

Artist/s Statement:

I sought to create a place that people enjoy, even when rushing through the linkway. The work is simple and elegant in shape, rich in surface, and delicate and complex in its detail, to give the travelling public pleasure and a sense of being in a special place.
