Free public transport travel extension for WA pension card holders

  • December 31 extension for unclaimed WA Pensioner Concession card free travel
  • Applies to entitlements which expired during March quarter
  • With final regional travel restrictions set to be removed from June 5 this will help boost tourism and local economies in WA's regional towns

Western Australian Pensioner Concession cardholders who could not access their free travel due to COVID-19 regional border restrictions will be granted an extension on their entitlement.

The extension is available to about 45,000 cardholders whose unclaimed free travel entitlement expired between March 1 and May 31.

The entitlement can now be used until December 31 this year.

This free and concessional travel is available to more than 370,000 Western Australian pensioners. It gives them access to one return or two single journeys with Transwa or flights to Perth (through the Department of Transport) for those living north of the 26th parallel, which begins at Shark Bay.

Pensioners can call Transwa on 1300 662 205 or the Department of Transport on 1300 660 147 to discuss eligibility or to book.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"With regional border restrictions now easing, we want WA residents to get back on our Transwa road coaches and trains to explore our great State again.

"This extension will allow our pensioner cardholders to once again use their free travel entitlement and provide a welcome boost to local tourism, which will play an important role in WA's COVID-19 economic recovery.

"WA has many regional towns that visitors can enjoy again, and Transwa provides a hassle-free way to travel to the likes of Margaret River, Albany, Jurien Bay, Toodyay, York and many other beautiful corners of WA.

"And, as our State continues to roll back COVID-19 restrictions and more regional borders open up, we look forward to welcoming more visitors to Perth via the Department of Transport's annual free trip scheme."
