Urban Art workshops making an impact

Monday, 21 July 2014

The latest event in Right Track’s series of youth engagement activities went off without a hitch, with the most recent urban art workshop.

The event brought together 25 young people from three separate youth organisations at The Dungeon Youth Centre in Ballajura. It aimed to engage young people in the areas of rail safety as well as teaching some new art skills, building self-confidence and helping create a concept logo for the new Right Track t-shirt.

Respected street artist Mike Barker (AKA Shime) led the workshop with a brainstorm and concept development on rail safety. The participants, from all over the north-east metro area, then each had the opportunity to practice their aerosol skills whilst learning about health and safety requirements and contributing to the achievement of their Certificate III in General Education for Adults.

The most popular skills learnt were the use of the different aerosol nozzles, how to layer colours and how altering the distance from the surface creates different effects. Mike also shared his wisdom borne from experience, which was that choosing to create legal street art was the smart thing to do and gives your artwork longevity.

The concepts created during the workshop will be combined to provide an updated logo for the Right Track t-shirts, which are then given out as prizes at community events. The shirts help promote the important message of being responsible or your own safety and respecting all passengers on the network. Each participant will get their own t-shirt and the Youth Centre will receive a framed version to display on their wall.

Did you know?

Some of Shime’s works are scattered across Perth. You may have seen some of his highly recognisable works, such as the Mandurah Line urban art project and the children’s faces on the freeway underpass on Wellington Street.
