For Steve Jobs the ability to understand the inner workings of computers enabled him to change the world and now thanks to a local tech start-up called Learnable, these same skills are being offered to 10,000 students around Australia for free for three years.
The initiative is the brainchild of 2012 BRW's Entrepreneur of the Year Mark Harbottle who would like to see Aussie kids being the creators, not just consumers of technology – so they can secure valuable jobs in Australia's digital future and contribute to the economy in a meaningful way.
Learnable was inspired to make this happen off the back of the Learn to Code Global Movement, supported by tech leaders as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.
On offer is the chance for students to learn from expert teachers in an online environment about how to develop and design websites and how to build apps for a variety of platforms. The program offers videos and tutorials to help students master Javascript, Ruby, Photoshop, HTML5 and more.
“Learning how to program didn’t start off as wanting to learn all of computer science or trying to master this discipline or anything like that, it started off because I wanted to do this one simple thing, I wanted to make something that was fun...” – Mark Zuckerberg.
Who knows, the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg could be hiding at the back of your classroom just waiting for an opportunity like this to change the world forever.
