Have you recently got your driver’s licence? Do you regularly use the pedestrian crossings on the Transperth network?
The Public Transport Authority is raising awareness among motorists and pedestrians about the importance of level crossing safety so if you answered yes to one or both of the questions above then keep on reading!
Trains can take a long time to stop, so taking chances and acting dangerously around level crossings can be fatal.
Below are some key safety points to remember around level crossings.
Motorists
- Make sure you have enough space to exit before entering a level crossing. It’s dangerous being caught in a level crossing when the warning bells start sounding. Before heading into the crossing, take into account any cars or traffic signals that might impact your ability to exit the yellow-hatched level crossing zone.
- Be prepared to stop your vehicle when approaching a level crossing. Stopping for a train to pass will only cost you a few minutes on your journey. Trying to beat the boom gates could cost you your life.
- There are penalties for unsafe behaviour around level crossings. Committing offences like failing to stop at a level crossing or stopping inside the yellow-hatched zone, could cost you up to four demerit points and a $200 fine.
Pedestrians
- Always use the designated pedestrian walkways when crossing the tracks. Pedestrian crossings on the PTA network have been designed to keep you safe. The automatic gates and warning bells are there to let you know when it is unsafe to cross.
Remember - it’s always worth the wait!
