Project benefits
The project is an important step in improving public transport options to and from the eastern suburbs as well as reducing the strain on current transport infrastructure due to anticipated passenger growth.
By 2022 the METRONET Forrestfield-Airport Link is expected to generate 20,000 passenger trips on the suburban rail network every day – increasing to 29,000 daily by 2032. In addition to providing strategically located stations at Redcliffe, Airport Central and High Wycombe, the new train line will:
- Create additional rail capacity on the Midland Line in the inner suburbs of Perth, where demand is expected to exceed current supply in the near future.
- Provide a viable alternative to car travel between the eastern suburbs and Perth – alleviating road traffic, easing congestion and reducing travel times for people living and working in the region.
- Enable continued growth of Perth Airport as a nationally important centre of employment, commerce and international trade.
- Encourage domestic and international tourism with improved access between Perth Airport and the city.
- Boost employment, residential and economic growth by encouraging transit-orientated development around the new suburban train stations at Redcliffe and High Wycombe.
